Target Audiences

Our target audience would primarily be young males, of around 17-23. I don't think that the song would appeal to anyone of a younger age they probably wouldn't understand the strong morals that the song is trying to convey. Our target audience has to be of an age where they have experienced the ups and downs of relationships. I also think that the rough masculine tone of the song would primarily appeal to men rather than women. Geographically, I think the song would appeal to a primarily British or North American audience or countries in the western world and English

speaking nations, due to its typically British style. I think my typical target audience would be of an lower to middle class and have a lifestyle where they go to festivals, concerts and enjoy socialising, partying and going out with friends, possibly a student, they like to feel that the music they listen to is different and not mainstream.  I think that our typical target audience member would be either C,D or E on the JICNAR scale, as the majority of the fans would be students or unemployed. I think that the majority of our target audiences would be innovators, groupies or rebels, they are people who what to be different, yet want to be accepted in their own group at the same time.

Our secondary target audience is very different from our primary target audience, as the song is a similar classic rock style of songs from the 70s and 80s. So our secondary target audience would be males aged 40-60. Their geographical distribution would also be primarily western and British and we think that parents and fathers would make up the majority of this audience, as children may introduce music to their parents, Therefore the audience are people who are likely to have good relationships with their children. They may also come across our bands at festival or through internet searches looking for rock music, as our band have a similar classic rock style. I think that our secondary target audience would also be of a low to middle class and would range from D to B on the JICNAR scale, I think that there lifestyle would consist of going to pubs, bars, original festivals eg Glastonbry.

Storyboarding

Below is a youtube clip that was shown to us in one of our media lessons. It consists of a step to step guide and some tips of how to produce a storyboard and why we should create them.

After watching this video we came across the website www.storyboardthat.com showing us an alternative way of producing a storyboard, though an internet program which enables you to virtually create a storyboard. We decided that we would use this method as it enables us to change an aspect of storyboard at a later date, if we decide to change certain elements, we also thaught that this method would create a much clearer storyboard clearly showing our intentions. Below is an example of a "storyboardthat"storyboard.

IFHY - Tyler, The Creator

The Video below, IFHY, by Tyler the creator is also set in a Dolls House. They have used a similar style of interior that we would like use in our video. They have used similar pastel, doll like colours that we wanted. The dolls house also uses that same layout, of four rooms, one bedroom, one bathroom a kitchen and a dining room, and we see shots of the house as a whole, presented in a similar style that we want to create (oppersite)

Styling

Our idea for the music video is that we see a family of four in a perfect house and throughout we see them becoming more and more fake until the parts of the house begin to turn into cardboard, for example they will be having a drink and the cup will turn into cardboard untill the end when the people themselves turn into cardboard, and then we zoom out to see that they are in a dolls house, and possibly the house itself turns into cardboard.
Here is some examples of cardboard objects we would like to include in our music video.

Here are the dolls that i have at home that I think we could use as they are wooden and very fake creating the atmosphere we would like to make, as well as wooden furniture which i think we could possibly use as well as or instead of the cardboard objects.

Mardy Bum - Initial concept

After sitting down in our group and brainstorming about our initial ideas, we quickly decided from the Lyrics that we wanted the main narrative to be about a couple in a relationship, who have a hot/cold relationship. We thought that we could have a couple in a room arguing and then we pan across to a different room and they are happy again. After watching the video "Bleeding Love" by Leona lewis, we decided to film different rooms, with different situations going on in each and the narrator can walk between each for example like a film show/ studio effect where we could pan up and down from one room to the next. Then we thaught about possibly filming a dolls house and posting in the rooms later in after effects. We were also thinking about wht style we wanted the overall video to posess, we thaught about the music video for "gives you hell"by all america rejects which was one of our previous music video ideas and we decided that we wanted to use a similar style and interior that they use, to enhance the perfect and sickly sweet lifestle they have.

Mardy Bum - The Arctic monkeys

We decided to abandon our "video killed the radio star" idea as we felt that the single was too well known and it would be hard to individualise and make our own, we would be selling the single on the success of bugles, rather than through our own marketing strategies. We also thaught that our concept is too extravagent and would be too expensive and difficult to deliver.

When we were looking around on the internet for an alternitive song, we all decided that we liked the style of the artic monkeys. When we did a youtube search we came across the song "Mardy bum" and we were supprised by the fact that it only had 300000 hits, which we thaught was very small for a band as well known as the Arctic Monkeys as well as no official music video.

Lydia had the origianl idea, then we sat round in our group and had a brainstorm of what we could include and what our concept should be.

Speech by Emily Tedrake - Music Video Commisioner

Emily Tedrake, a video commissioner for polymer records came into class yesterday to give us a speech about the commissioning process and to talk through some of the videos that she has been involvd in. She first explained to us that music videos usually have a budget of 1,000 to 100,000, and that they are made as part of a marketing campaign to sell the record. The style and content of the video will depend upon the budget provided. She also explained how the process takes one month in total with a one day (12hour) shoot. Emily's job is to find the correct director to do the job, by asking them for treatments.

One of the music videos that she has helped make includes "Overgrown" by james Blake and was directed by a top director. The treatment contained minimal pictures however was extremely detailed the director was very clear and focused with what he wanted to acheive. This is something that I feel my group and I need to consider when making the videos, we should try to potrtay our timeline and story board in as much deail as possible, talking more about the styling of the shot and the set/ costumes.

Concept

The concept for our idea was to have a pile of old TVs stacked up, ( as if they are in a skip yard) our idea is that every tv screen shows the same shot and then the camera zoomed in and out of them. Another idea we has was to have the TV screens having different parts of the body on the, and stacked up the whole of the boy is revealed. For example this is an example that Lydia made:
Then our idea was that a removal man could come and pull them apart and replace them with new tv screens to show the changing of the technological generations, conforming to the title and lyrics "video killed the radio star"

More Music Video Ideas

we rejected the idea of "sit down" by james due to its slow tempo and strong 80s style, which we think would be difficult to modernise to attract our target audience. we looked up a cover "house" version of "sit down" however we did not like the style. We came across the song "video killed the radio star" by buggles. We thaught this song would be a good idea as it is quite upbeat and poppy and although it is 30 years old , it still has a modern adaptable style. There is also only one current music video which looks very old and dated and is in muted colour, so we feel there is a market open for a new and updated version.

For the content we decided to use the theme of how technology is making it harder for artist to establish themselves due to piracyafter we were inspired by the article "Music in the online agewe feel that we could produce a music video conveying this message and showing how the different generations have changed in technology. another idea we had was to convey artists "live hard die young attitude" after looking at the 27s club and haow artists are throwing their life away, we thaught about showing old footage of artists such as Marylin Monroe, Witney Huston and Amy Winehouse.

Sit Down by James - music video idea 1 as a group

For our music video project we decided in our group that we wanted to use an 80s song and modernise it. Our inital idea was to base the music video on the song "sit down" by james. It would be staged in a physiatric waiting room and chair duets throughout. then we decided to look at some coveres of "sit down" such as by "the enemy" however they all seem quite dull and dated,  none of the covers consisted of a modern poppy vibe that we were looking for, so we decided against this song idea.

Music video idea 3

My third idea for a music video would begin with an old fashioned open case, from behind it you can see clothes flying in the air as if someone is deciding what to bring with them on holiday. and as we shut the case we see that a she is actually a man, dressed as a women. She has bright pink lipstick on and hair in curlers, she is wearing a frumpy old fashioned dress. We see her sitting on her case trying to close it and as it closes, she wipes her forehead. Then we cut to a scene of her arriving at a train station, and as she gets her case out of her boot, we see a group of other "ladies" lined up outside the station and they wave at her. They all have curlers in there hair and bubble gum pink lipstick.

We then see them (in speeded up footage) piling onto the train. Then we cut to a scene and they get out of the train at Brighton we then see them waling along the seafront (in speeded up footage) Then we see them go down onto the beach and sit down on sun chairs as they sit and chat, with exaggerated female expressions. All the women get large sunglasses out of their bag and put them on as they continue to chat.We then see (in speeded up footage) the women walking along Brighton pier  and they all get ice creams. We then see one of the women pointing to a ride on the pier and she and another women get on the ride while the other women wave at them. we then see footage of them walking back down the peir and they go into an old fashioned tea shop, they all sip their tea like a "lades."  one of them belches by mistake and they all frown and tut their heads. then we see them all walking alongs sadly as the day has ended. then we cut to a scene of the lady back in the bedroom piling all of the female clothing back into the case and puts it in the wardrobe. as we pan back we realise that she is now he again and is wearing a school masters gown  as he reaches and puts a masters cap on his head. We then cut to a scene of him walking down a school corridor and he subtly acnowlages his fellow holiday makers who we realise are all teachers as-well.

I got my inspiration for this idea from the song "i want to break free" by queen.
i baced my idea around the song "Holiday" by Vampire weekend

Music video Idea 2

My second idea for a music video consists of a buzzing bar/nightclub, there is a boy sitting in a booth chatting to a big group of friends, there are people dancing all over the room having fun. Then it would cut to a pretty girl waling into the club, she sits at the bar and orders a drink. She looks at her watch and looks very bored, she has clearly been stood up. Then i would cut to a a different scene, in a magical world, where there is a woman sitting at the top of a Castile looking out of her window, bored and brushing her long golden hair, she is meant to represent Repunsal.

Then i would cut to a good looking man (prince) riding a white horse on a dusty track as he juggles some apples, we can see that he is approaching the castle. Then i would cut back to scene 1, in the nightclub, and we see the boy (who is still chatting two his friends) looking over at the girl ( who is still bored and on her own) at this point i would cut to shots of people dancing and enjoying the night. Then i would cut back to scene 2, shooting the prince riding on his hourse, and looks up at the castle and sees the girl. She looks down at him, and they are in love. He shouts up to the princess and she claims she is board. Then the pace would increase and i would  we cut back to scene one where we see the boy talking to his friends and

letting them know that he is going to be back in a minute, and we see him get up from his seat and in slow motion he walks towards the girl. Then i would cut back to scene 2 and we see the peasant boy climbing up the side of the castle to reach the girl. Then as the music comes to an end we cut to scene one as the boy sits down next the girl and shakes her hand and she smiles as she is no longer "alone". Similarly i would cut to scene 2 and the music ends when the prince finally climbs up to her window and pulls himslef up and grins at her

Music Video Idea 1

My first idea for a music video consists of a children’s birthday party of around 11, in an average semi detached house. The children sitting down on the floor playing parcel the parcel and they look bored, there is a mum looking over them making sure they behave. The colour is muted and we cut to scenes of fed up looking faces as they turn to look at the clock on the wall. The boy who’s hosting the party is looking impressed .

Then the doorbell rings and Arianna Grande is at the door with a big bubble machine (she is probably an older cousin). The boy who’s birthday it is smiles and gives Arianna Grande a hug. And the colour gradually changes and become brighter and stronger. Then the doorbell rings again and a big group of her friends walk through the door with balloons and they give them to the children and suddenly the party is getting into swing. We see smiles on the children’s faces. Arianna Grande begins to sing while the children stand around watching and laughing dancing and joining in the party. Then we cut to a scene of Arianna Grande coming out of the kitchen with an apron on, with flour on her face holding a big birthday cake full of candles, she puts it on the table and the boys face lights up and he blows out the candles. Then we cut back to shots of her singing to the children while they continue to dance.

Why Piracy is perpetuating plastic pop - Helienne Lindvall

Lars Ulrich and Metallica sued napster for online piracy, the myth was created that only wealthy/greedy rock stars were upset by piracy.

Lilly Allen lashed out at older artist who declared their opposition to online copyright enforcement. As she claims that it was easy for them to say this after they had made there money, during times when digital piracy was not around, leading to her receiving thousands of abusive messages

“Massive attacks 3d” told the BBC how freighting it was to see the total amount of downloads on unlicensed sites, as this is how thousands of people make there money. He is worried that free downloads will cheapen music eventually

Noel Gallagher is annoyed that people can download music for free as he states “it costs me a quarter of a million pounds to make it” so refuses to give it away for nothing, especially as records get more expensive to make.

Billy corgan states “that trade begins at the point where people are happy to pay for something” he believes that the fact that is so easy to download something for free makes it seem like a big decision to pay to download something.

I could use the notion of the article when producing my own products by encouraging my star to speak out against piracy to try to stop music from cheapening or encouraging them to group up with some other artists to set up an anti piracy scheme.

A blog of Jamal Edwards from the Guardian

  Jamal Edwards-founderer of SBTV

Jamal Edwards He suggests that to be successful you have to be creative and look for gaps in the market for an artist genre eg the space for an online e channel dedicated to grime music was wide open

Edwards filmed rappers preforming on backstreets, straight to the camera witch are raw, without studio gloss to create thrilling results, and however Edwards didn’t want to be restricted to this genre only.

 - SBTV has been highly successful; it has had a total of 39million views, with over 50,000 subscribers and makes money from advertising

He signed a deal with Sony RCA to create his own imprint within the label

He advises other young people to "chase your dream" ad don’t look at what other people are doing as this could "cloud your vision" and make it more difficult for you in the long run.

Jamal indicates that you should be a “rebel” and experiment and try out different options and be creative in location choices

I may make use of this notion when producing my own products through looking for a gap in the market for certain genres for example I may i feel there is a lack of female singer songwriters or I may select an interesting genre such as country.

I may also encourage my artist to be signed with or played on an internet channel rather than the TV as Jamal suggested. In this way, the songs can be marketed directly to its target audience, as well as being more cost effective.
