Blood of Purity feedback

Emma Smith thought the “plot of the thriller was about a crazy girl, or sacrifice, and she likes the way the photos were burnt” however feels that ‘The plot could have been more clear and the music builds up to  fast.” I feel that it’s a positive that she did not know exactly what the film was about other than something negative and uneasy, as it  indicates that we have created mystery.

Generally the majority of the feedback comments were positive.  Most people got an idea about what the film was about   suggesting that it was about a murder, religious horror however weren’t completely sure. This was the tone that we wanted to create after watching the sequence for the first time. We wanted the audience to be sure as the plotline of the sequence, however set an uneasy uncomphertable tone. Most people indicated that they taught the editing and special effects were especially effective “How the screen is washed away like the screen in being burnt by the candle” This is a major success for us as this was our main focus point for our thriller. As a negative the majority of the audience found it difficult to understand the plotline stating that we should “show the story more, as it’s not clear what’s happening”. However we created this atmosphere deliberately as we did not want to revel to much and sustain a mysterious tone, however next time we would probably make the background lighter, and film more zoomed-out shots in order to make it seem less claustrophobic.

what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from the prelim task to the thriller.

Looking back at our prelim, the camera work that we used seems extreamly basic compared to our thriller as when filming our thriller we took into account many different aspects of the camera to enhance the moods that we wanted to establish. For example, in many shots we filmed whilst zooming in quickly to give the illusion that we are the eyes of the artist. We have also filmed from a low camera angle to enhance the artists status, whilst we filmed Ellie from a high camera angle to exaggerate her lack of power and fragility. However for our preliminary task we filmed everyone from the same angle and did not experiment with moving the camera .

The mesenscene is also much more effective in our thriller than our preliminary task, for our thriller we wanted to create a rich and diverse, believable setting, which will help to heighten the atmosphere and reinforce the sinister “look” of the sequence.  For example for the artists studio we used sams previous artwork which we dripped blood onto, we also bourght in paints, paintbrushes and a variety of equipment that an artist would have. Fotr the girls bedroom we used a dark beam old fashioned bed with noting else in the room to enhace the disturbing amshpere. We considered the lighting by encluding a number of large candles to sustain the dark, creepy setting with an old, biblical atmosphere.   Hovever in or preliminary task, we filmed the boys purley in the outfits that they were alrady wearing, with no props, in the open day light. As a result there is not a very strong look to the scene.

The editing is also much more sucsessful in our thriller than our prelim task. For our thriller we all became confinadnt with knowing how to use final cut pro, whilst learing how to use the basic settings for example  zooming in and out, enlarging the text and rendering. We also experimented with many different settings for example we used crossfade to create a smoother transition between the shots and overlaying of two shots to create a distorted atmosphere. We also learnt how to use layering and to increase the artistic look that we wanted to create. However for our prelim, we created an extremely basic composition, we did not change the shots in any way, we merely learnt how to cut the scenes and compose them together.

The sound used in our thriller is also much more succesfull than the sound in our prelim. Our thriller contains distorted yet biblical sounding choir music, this is in order to enhance the disturbing atmosphere which is indicated throughout the live action, however for our prelim task we merely used the dialogue which was written out by the school.

Our Target Audience

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our media project is a creative, art house style psychological thriller, which would fit into the alternative/ Indi genres.

Our  typical audience member would be male aged 29 (generally men in this age group tend to enjoy the edgy thrill seeking genre more than women) They will probably live in London and will be well educated, (university degree level) middle class, with an intelligent interest in culture (someone that attends art galleries, and alternative cinema on a regular basis) They may also be intersted in neiche magazines eg uncut or gardian. They are passionate abut music and film, and will probably listen and watch alternative, independent genres eg enemy, alt-j or the grimes. They will seek out less well known fashion labels and have a desire not to blindly follow current fashion trends. They are also probably inteested in the internet and regularly use social networking sites, chatrooms or blogger.
This person would ideally work in a creative industry eg a graphic designer with an appreciation for the stylistic film. They would certainly have Creative hobbies and interests.
They are likely to hear about are thriller through niche magazines and in the media

Our secondary audience would be male and females over 20, they are either generally interested in art house films or people who seek out thrillers. They may either be drawn to our edgy, creative approach or generally attracted to the fact that our thriller contains horror and suspense. They are likely to hear about our thrillers through niche magazines, and through the media. Some people are likely to see our film through art house cinemas, however most viewers will probably view our film through DVD sales or download. I imagine that generally the people that would be attracted to be thriller are well educated with creative hobbies and occupations.

Here I have created a Facebook page for our ideal target audience member

Who would produce and distribute our thriller

Warp film company would probably wish produce and distribute our film, because blood of purity contains artistic Innovative ideas, it is also of the physiological thriller genre which warp films have much experience working with.

For example warp productions have produced “dead mans shoes” This was made similarly to ours, it is also of the physiological thriller genre containing artistic innovative ideas with a unique style. The film was also shot on a tight budget (723,000) it also features first time actors, eg Toby Kebbell (who was later nominated for most promising newcomer at the BIFA.)

Warp films also produced “snow town murders” which was also made in a similar vein to blood of purity. Again, Snow town murder is of physiological thriller genre produced with a low budget. Similarly, snow town is quite violent and rated 18.

“Kit list” is another film made in a similar vein to blood of purity, which proves there experience with producing films of this genre. Kill list is in the physiological horror genre featuring a similar violent and sinister plotline containing large amounts of mystery and suspense. It too also had a low budget (500,000) and is rated 18.

I believe that warp films would be the right company for us as it’s a local independent company, that is used in working with low critically acclaimed, or first time actors ad directors. Warp films is used to working with and keeping to tight budgets, with a limited shooting schedule. They also have much experience with shooting quite violent 18rated physiological thrillers or films with an alternative genre.

Our film, blood of purity, fits perfectly into the ethos of the institution, Warp Films has a reputation for specializing in producing innovative, low-budget films, particularly for the art house genre.
The same niche audience that would be interested in warp films (eg those who subscribe to the newsletter) would probably be interested in our film, with a similar target audience. They would predominantly attract over 18 year old males, especially those who are interested in watching thrilling, violent yet artistic productions. They also attract those who are interested in Alternative, art house genres)

In order to advertise and make money out of “blood of purity” Warp films would firstly create an article on it in their newsletter, then advertise it on social networking sites eg Facebook, MySpace, twitter, and would go on to be advertised at local film festivals (eg Sundance Film Festival), in order to find an international distributer.  Warp are most likely to make money out of DVD sales rather than through box-office takings as it won’t appeal to the mainstream cinema audience.

I have decided that the ideal company that we would pick to distribute our film would be “film four”, this is because they are a small British company who are also used to working with and accommodating low budgeted movies, they also publicise their productions on there channel 4 TV channel, this means they can show the blood of purity premiere on the film 4 channel.

A foreign distributer may also be used in order to be able to help fund blood of purity. This means that our film will get to Europe, however as the rights to the film have been sold, any money made from sales in that country will go back to the distributer and so money will not be made. However it may boost its credibility internationally and result in a worldwide increase in sales.

Overall, blood of purity will probably make most of its money from iTunes sales, or via Internet downloads eg vimeo. It will not however make its money from the box office, as it is not likely to get to cinemas. This is due to the fact that our film will appeal to a small, niche audience rather than a mainstream audience. However, the film may be shown in some art house cinemas.
