Props: The art work

The art work in this thriller is the most important aspect of it. The art must be suitable, dark, eery, inflicting pain upon woman and most importantly look realistic. This is why we have chosen sams art pieces from his GCSE art. These art pieces are exactly what we need for the thriller. They involve all the elements needed. The artist that inspired these pieces is Allison Harvard. With these pieces, we have the freedom to add to them, continue dripping paint on them which is what we wish to do, burn them and copy them as there are no copy right restrictions. We need these art works to be displayed in the artists studio. There are 2 canvas' which we can display on the walls of the studio, then there are books which contain the artwork in which we can use for close ups, burning, and ink experimentation

The drawing above is one of the main pieces we will feature, mainly because of the blood dripping used is prominent and looks the most frightening. Further the girl in this drawing looks similar to Ellie de Rohan who is our actress, so using it would add certain familiarity in parallel with the action to the miss-en-scene.

Costume for the man

For the man, it is important he looks creepy, dirty and like an artist. We debated ideas about what we wanted the artist to wear. We wanted to conform to stereotypes of what a villain should look like yet still make it clear to the audience that he is an artist. We wondered over whether a leather jacket would be to much, we thought it may cause him to look more like an action thriller villain, more that a psychological thriller. So we went along the route of the artistic look, we thought about putting him in overalls, covered in paint and blood. Another debate was whether the artist should have glasses on or not. The movie 'The Lovely Bones' was an inspiration for the look of the artist- the child capturer in the film has an eery look we want for our artist.

Costume for the girl

For the girl, we wanted something elegant, floral and feminine, yet we wanted something which looks old and used, hence the old style of a 1920's silk robe. The use of this robe signifies that she does not have anything else to wear, she is being forced to wear this. As the role of the girl is abused, we want a way to show the audience her wounds and scars in the opening, we will also put her in only a simple bra and pants, white (purity and innocence connotation). This further shows that she does not have choice with what she wears, that she has had the basic necessities of clothing removed from her.

Thriller evaluation: costume

The costume we used not only was chosen to reflect the characters; we also used it to reflect dominant ideologies. The costume for the girl was a light pink robe and a floral, pastel light pink robe. This was done to show her feminine side, also it is done to reflect her is innocent and pure- this angelic nature would cause the audience express sorrow for the girl and emotionally invest in her character, and consequently our film. The costume was based on a 1920’s woman- we felt this would be necessary to add an almost vintage style element to the film. Further to this, this suits our thriller by the artist having some fetish about olden style girls. Moreover, we wanted the costume to be revealing to attract a male audience. An attractive female in a film is a key feature of attracting an audience; so dressing her in a slightly provocative outfit would attract the male audience, as well as suiting the theme of sexual exploitation. We based her look on specific 1920’s showgirls, their natural glamour and poise, such as Marion Davies and Mary Pickford- using these, as our inspiration would also entice an older, more classic audience.

On the other hand, we portrayed the artist as dark, creepy and dirty. This would reflect the evil nature of him- it is almost a version of pathetic fallacy, but the outfit reflects the personality and mindset of our character, not the weather. As he is an artist, it was crucial that his outfit was covered in paint, blood and inks. We did this by buying overalls, then splattering them with paint, inks, fake bloods, charcoals and mud- this gave them an authentic feel, which also related to the dirty nature of the character. Characters in films that inspired our costume choice are the paedophile in Evilenko, and Pollock. The costume choice was to portray to the audience, his dark mind, the blood exclaims his death ability.

Purity - opening thriller change

Initially at the beginning of out thriller we were going to have a voice over of a news report, telling the audience that another girl has been taken, and if anyone knew any information, to report it to the police.  But once we thought more deeply about this voice over, we came to agree that the naturalism of the voice over contrast the stylistic elements of our thriller and would not match the action. Instead of this, we thought involving a quote at the beginning of the thriller about purity, as that is the key theme of our  thriller.

This is the quote we chose to use, simply because it suits the thriller the most and the

impact of the power of three at the end of the quote will entice the audience the most.

We must be pure. I do not speak merely of the purity of the senses. We must observe great purity in our will, in our intentions, in all our actions.'

God desires from you the least degree of purity of conscience more than all the works you can perform.

--St. John of the Cross

Reaserch into quotes:

Deep within yourself, listen to your conscience which calls you to be pure . . . a home is not warmed by the fire of pleasure which burns quickly like a pile of withered grass. Passing encounters are only a caricature of love; they injure hearts and mock God's plan."
--Pope John Paul II

God desires from you the least degree of purity of conscience more than all the works you can perform.

--St. John of the Cross

'Blessed the one who loves holiness like the light and has not defiled his body with dark deeds of the Evil One in the sight of the Lord.'
--St. Ephrem of Syria

"'Purity?' they ask. And they smile. They are the ones who go on to marriage with worn-out bodies and disillusioned souls."
- St. Josemaria Escriva

Set design ideas

The Bedroom:
We want the bedroom to be simple, cold and uncomfortable, with dark panel wood floor boards, a black metal framed bed with simple linen on it. We will have a full sized mirror on the wall (old fashioned). The wall paper will be pealing of the wall, with quotes about purity underneath showing through. Nothing will look comfortable or luxurious.

The Art Studio:
The Studio will be grotty, dark, messy and creepy. There will be his working desk where most of the action will take place. Lit by a amber light lamp and candles- an eery sense. There will be paint brushes scattering the room, artist books everywhere and piles of his art work. On the main wall at the back will be the three drawings of 'the three graces'. We wanted to have props in there which had detail which we could have close ups of e.g a rusty fan.

Inspiration for the Set of the Artist

We have this idea of the artists studio being derelict, run down, rustic and dirty. These images show how we want the studio to look. We really like the idea of having old wooden floor boards, peeling walls and his art work all over the floor and walls. We also want paints, charcoal, and other artists tools all over the place and cluttered on shelves. We would like to have a fire place,
with a candle burning in there and candles by the
sink, the easel, and at the artists desk.

Inspiration for the set of the girs room

For the girls room we liked the idea of the walls having old, damp, floral wallpaper on, that has been ripped in some parts to reveal writing on the walls that are sinsiter, scary and disturbed words. In the girls room we'd like an old rusting bed, a mirror and a lamp on a bedside table. We would keep the same flooring as we had in the artists room to show that it's in the smae place.

Development of ideas for Blood of Purity

Due to the face that our thriller opening sequence will contain a moderate amount of close up shots of hands of the artists hands, we have deiced to analyze different hands to see which look right for our thriller, which we can adapt to James Hartmans hands. I think that the hands that have paint or ins on them looks best, especially around the cuticles,  this is so that the viewer can clearly see that these are the artists hands, heavily defining him from the girls, who should have extremely clean, and "pure" hands. This also and creates a sense that the artist he is unclean or possibly up to mischief. The hands which have plasters on them also look very good, as it makes the artist seem tough, and reinforces the idea that he is up to no good.
