Development of ideas for our thriller

In order to develop our ideas for our thriller, we decided to look at the James Bond introduction sequences to give us inspiration of possible creative ideas that we could use and apply to our plotline and genre.

  We have also decided to experiment with the use of vignetting round the edges of the screen as well as smoke, as seen in the Dante inferno game introduction. This is so that a dangerous unsafe atmosphere is created, giving the viewers a glimpse of what is to come in the film.  We will also experiment with the use of negative space for our title sequence, for example in “The thing” the title gradually appears through the use of light .We may try to incorporate this idea, however with the use of smoke making up shapes using the negative space.

As our lead role is of an artist, and his paintings of the girls are of large significance within the film, we are going to try to experiment with the shapes and effects of paint and ink on the page and in water. We will carry this out by dropping ink into a tray of water and filming in slow motion in order to show the shapes and movement of the ink in the water.  For example showing in “Black in and Water” YouTube clip. We will also try applying water on as page in a shape, using petal water brushes which we will buy from amazons. Then we will drop ink on the page which will follow the water and appear in a shape. We will take a close up shot of the ink and slow it down into slow motion to show the movement of the ink, as shown in “Water Ink.”

From the order of names that appear during the opening title sequence, we can see that the institution that made the movie is usually the first name that appears, followed by the production company and director. Then the actors names are displayed and appear generally in order or importance (the major movie stars and lead actors will appear first) after  most of the actors names have appeared, the main behind the scenes peoples names appear (music,casting, production designer) lastly, the director and producers names are repeated before the opening sequence finishes and the film starts.

                                         Plot of Narrative Action of ‘Blood of Purity’

‘Blood of Purity’ opens with a black screen with a voice over of a news report declaring another girl has been taken and is warning the general public to be careful. The darkness is broken by a match strike, this then starts a sequence of quick cuts of eyes closed. This match then lights a candle, these quick cuts of the girls eyes begin to open and blink.
Bird’s eye view shot of art work; dark shadows. Again a quick cut sequence showing him drawing, cuts back and forth from him being there or not. Cuts of the paintbrushes/charcoal/pencils from different angles. Leads into painting sequence, two clips over laid and separated. Revert back to girl’s eyes. Crying and bloodshot- close up of eyes. As tears fall down/off face, we quick cut to blood/paint dripping into water pot. Close up of rippling water.Quick cut back to girl screaming, as this happens the water from the pot will feed into the water in the photography tray and there are photos being developed in the water.
The water pot is then dropped but the camera does not leave the close up of the water pot. This then quick cuts into smashing of the pot from different angles, slow and sped up.
Cuts back to his drawing/writing in the diary. We see pages being turned and layered shots of him drawing different pictures. Subtle over lay of blood dripping down paper.
Hammering nails into the faces of the pictures of the girls (just developed). Overlaying of blood steading dripping from nose. Quick cuts back to him slamming her head against wall.
Long shot of girl in corner of room. On the floor, shaking looking scared. After 3 seconds, overlaying shot of her screaming and banging on the wall (SAME CAMERA SHOT).  

Burning from the back of the photo shot emerges. Quick cut series shot of it speeding up the burning. Shot of artist slicing through photograph. We see him slicing the white back of the photo, then reverts to the image and the scalpel head slicing down her body on the image.
Shot of scratch marks on back- reverse shots of him drawing the figures and the side of his face as she draws. Shots of him dripping paint down the drawings from the eyes.
The climax of shots consist of quick cuts man carving ‘Purity’ into her arm, this can all intertwine with shots of him drawing, her in the room, screaming, trying to escape.
Zoom in on the ‘Purity’. To end black screen, blood of purity title. Blood drips of like in Dawn of the dead.

How/ where we are going to get our props

• We will borrow paint brushes, charcoal and overalls from the school art department
• I will bring in a candle, jam jar, matches and scalpel from home
• we will look on Amazon for a fake blood kit
• we may look on ebay for a Polaroid camera

Summary of narrative

How I will use Kyle Coopers methods in my own work

Having learned about the methods Kyle cooper uses in his title sequences, I will try to incorporate some of these methods into my own work. For example. I plan to take inspiration from Coopers "Se7en" sequence when he takes close up, quick editing montage shots of someone's hand, I will adapt this style towards the mad painter character in my pollen, by possibly showing close up shots of a paint brush, or slow the slow motion of paint dripping down the page. We also plan to film the artist in a dark, candle lit room in order to produce large shadows. We may also use methods shown in sparred man where he takes a key concept ( the spider web) and uses it as a border line for the text. We may adapt this style, and apply it to the smoke coming from the candle.
